of the houses in ten other lanes and of some isolated houses in which cases of Bubonic Plague had occurred, comprising in all 162 houses.

On April the 5th, the Sanitary Board declared No. 9 Health District to be infected with Bubonic Plague and a house-to-house cleansing and limewashing was at once instituted, three privates of the Royal Welch Fusiliers and a Sapper being lent by the Military Authorities to assist in this work, which was under the personal supervision of Inspector Clerihew. This district contains 1,000 Chinese houses, and I personally visited and inspected every one of these houses after they had been cleansed and limewashed.

As the Chinese will not notify the occurrence of cases of Bubonic Plague or other infectious disease in their houses, His Excellency the Governor appointed on May 1st a senior student of the College of Medicine for Chinese to engage in house-to-house visitation in No. 9 District, and to seek for such cases, and on May 10th, five other senior students commenced similar duties and all six are still engaged upon this work and have discovered a number of such cases, which probably would not otherwise have come to light until the patients were dead.

Owing to representations made by the Tung Wah Hospital Authorities, permission was granted to them by His Excellency the Governor to reopen their branch Plague Hospital, and this was accordingly done on May 23rd. The Hospital being placed under the control of Dr. Lowson, who is responsible for the due observance of all sanitary precautions, the treatment of the patients being in the hands of Chinese doctors from the Tung Wah Hospital.

The disinfection of all Plague-infected houses has been, throughout the epidemic, under the personal care and
